Yataimura Maru is a Japanese-style izakaya located in the area said to be the center of Portland’s food scene, SE Division St. The restaurant’s kitchen is split into a sushi, ramen and grill area and, just as its name implies, the interior is reminiscent of a Japanese alleyway in which yatai food carts are lined up side by side.

There are counter seats in front of the sushi and grill kitchens, but the same menu can be enjoyed no matter where you choose to sit. In the summer, around six tables are set up outside as well. The restaurant has 70 to 80 seats available altogether. Most of the customers here are, perhaps because of the restaurant’s location, not tourists but local regulars.

The menu includes a wide variety of items to choose from, including the main sushi, ramen and grilled items, as well as okonomiyaki, karaage, agedashi tofu, grilled fish and more. In addition to the more traditional Japanese izakaya menu, the chef, a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu Portland with experience training in both local and Tokyo restaurants, also provides adventurous original items using Japanese ingredients under the supervision of the restaurant’s Japanese owner as special menu items. There are also many vegetarian and gluten free options to choose from. The restaurant’s popular menu items include its Japanese Hamachi Kama, as well as its Tokyo Ramen, which uses noodles, soup, kaeshi sauce and other ingredients made entirely in-house.

The Japanese sake menu includes not only junmai-shu, but also a selection of 8 to 14 varieties of delicious sake to fit the season, including a wide variety such as honjozo and namazake on a rotating menu.

In addition, Shigezo Izakaya, Izakaya Kichinto and Wa Kitchen Kuu, which is set to open in 2017, are all restaurants in the area run under the same ownership.
