Izakaya Kichinto is a Japanese-style izakaya restaurant which opened in December 2015. The location in the southeast area of Portland is two stories tall and has around 80 seats with a focus on the circular booth seats where customers can have a good time without worrying about bothering those around them. Seating areas include the ramen and grilled food counter and bar counter, along with around 10 tatami-room seats on the second floor. In the summer, there is also seating provided on the outdoor veranda. The restaurant’s interior decorations include vibrant movie and advertising posters as well as large paper lanterns which catch the eye.

The restaurant’s menu, supervised by the Japanese executive chef who wished to provide a taste of Japan’s izakaya culture in which customers can try a little bit of everything as they please, includes staples such as sushi, ramen and edamame, as well as other well-known Japanese menu items such as salads, grilled skewers, gyoza dumplings, karaage, agedashi tofu and saikyo-yaki (Kyoto-style grilled fish). Despite not being a specialty shop, all items are painstakingly hand-crafted from scratch with Japanese dashi and seasonings for a selection of items that they can confidently say show off the true taste of Japan.

The restaurant’s chef and manager, Tachikawa, who came to the USA in 2016, recommends the restaurant’s Spicy Miso Ramen, which is created completely with ingredients made in-house, including the noodles, soup and roasted pork fillet toppings. The pleasantly spicy soup and crisp bok choy are quite delicious. The Miso Marinated Grilled Salmon uses saikyo miso brought in from Japan. The restaurant’s alcoholic beverage menu includes a delicious standard offering for each season, including beer and Japanese sake.

In addition, Shigezo Izakaya, Yataimura Maru and Wa Kitchen Kuu, which is set to open in 2017, are all restaurants in the area run under the same ownership.
