MIZUKI, a hideaway-style Japanese restaurant, has been open since 2016 and is located just three minutes away from the center of Sanlitun on foot. The restaurant focuses on creating original Japanese cuisine with its courses and a la carte menus and offers traditional Japanese course meals as well.

A large sushi counter awaits customers as they enter the restaurant, and fugu (blowfish) can be found swimming in the fish tank there. The restaurant has seven private rooms of varying sizes available as well as 60 seats, making for a spacious and relaxed interior.

The restaurant’s most recommended dish is their eel kamameshi. Eel creates the center-point for this dish with beef, red snapper, mushrooms, salmon, and other ingredients slowly grilled to perfection on a bed of rice in a kama (iron pot) for an exquisite treat with a perfect harmony of flavors. This dish takes some time to come to the table, as it is made to order, but it is well worth the wait.

Another menu item worthy of note is the MIZUKI’s selection of dishes using Okinawan black pig pork. This pork has ¼ the cholesterol of the local pork, is full of vitamin B1 (amino acids), and has ample amounts of the umami ingredient glutamic acid, which makes for a soft and delicious meat. The best way to get every last bit of flavor from this Okinawan black pork is by ordering the Okinawa black pork shabu shabu. This menu item, with its distinct lack of the characteristic odor of pork and no scum formation in the soup, is quite popular with female customers as well. Other popular items include black pork steamed in a bamboo steamer, beef and black pork grilled on a ceramic tile, and a number of other highly popular items making full use of this delicious pork, including stewed meat dishes.

The man responsible for creating this exquisite menu is Satoru Kawagoe, a chef with 23 years of experience. Chef Kawagoe was the youngest person to ever obtain a fugu preparation license (the most difficult cooking license to obtain in Japan), and he is skilled at not only fugu cuisine but a variety of original cuisine as well. He is excels in bringing out the flavors of each ingredient in his cooking and has received praise for his beautiful presentation as well.
